Rural areas around the world tend to have very poor or no cellular coverage particularly in low economy countries.

The main reason for such poor coverage is that operator’s ROI is negative because ARPU is lower than in higher economy regions, population is sparse and CAPEX and OPEX of traditional infrastructure equipment is too high to generate any profit.

A new type of infrastructure is therefore required to address the specific needs of this market in order to reduce significantly CAPEX and OPEX.

OPEX is reduced with the use of alternate energy, such as solar or wind generated electrical power which requires low power architecture and components which includes turning off devices when idle, novel multi-carrier power amplifier architectures.

Systems designed to operate correctly with natural convection rather than forced air cooling will also significantly reduce OPEX.

CAPEX is reduced with more integrated sub-systems based on fewer components combined with low cost power supplies and fewer heat sinks. These features allow for a design that is smaller and lower cost enclosure.
