The advent and strong pick-up of mobile data using a variety of air interfaces has modified the traditional cellular network architecture based primarily on large towers with high capacity and high coverage basestations (BTS). This model is the most efficient one for Voice services as far as Operators’ ROI is concerned.

However, with the success of Mobile Data based on 3G technology, capacity and coverage can’t be combined any more in the same BTS- a distributed architecture with both large BTS and small cells is required. These small cells are high capacity BTS with a small cell range for densely populated areas whether indoor or outdoor such as airports, shopping malls, downtown areas, large offices and in-building floors.
